“The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page”
~Rachel Anders
When I shop for books, I am rather specific about them. A few times my mom gets me books that she thinks I will enjoy reading and so often I see the titles, blurbs and decide not to read them. So, I put them on my shelf and let them be as they collect dust. But then it just happens, I go and pick up the book and start reading and I won’t be able to put it down. When my mom notices this she chides me. A couple of weeks ago my parents took me to a book shop to buy new books and as we were browsing through the endless shelves of enticing books, my mom spotted Anne of Green Gables. She says that at least every third book I read should be a classic. I argued and told her I was not interested in reading it but finally I came around and decided to buy it and from there my journey through the pages of this alluring book began…
Anne of Green Gables is a series of 9 books. The first book written more than a century ago in 1908, introduces us to Anne Shirley the protagonist of the series. The world depicted in the book is very different one from today.Anne is a talkative and creative young girl who often has trouble with controlling her imagination. She worries about her red hair, freckles and thin figure through sun shine and moon light. She imagines herself as Lady Cordelia who is fine and beautiful. Her story begins at Green Gables when Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert, two siblings decide to adopt a boy but instead the asylum sends them Anne. At the sight of her Marilla a stern and proper lady with a fine regard for silence is shocked. She decides it is best to send Anne back to the asylum from where she came, this as Anne says sends her into the depths of despair. The next evening Marilla drives down to meet the woman who brought Anne from the asylum she discovers the sad story of Anne’s past and pities the young orphan. After hearing her story, she decides to let Anne stay at Green Gables.
Soon she meets Diana Barry and the two girls grow extremely fond of each other and are soon inseparable. But soon trouble knocks on Anne’s door when she accidentally gives Diana currant wine instead of raspberry cordial. Diana’s mom is infuriated when she finds Diana lying on her bed…… drunk! She firmly forbids Diana from speaking to Anne. As often as Anne gets into scrapes that often she figures out how to get out of them. This incident only strengthens the bond between the two friends. As for me, I found this part hilarious and was in splits.
The rest of the book talks about how Anne deals with Mrs. Lynde a very nosy neighbor, Gilbert Blythe a classmate who teases Anne’s red hair, Mr. Phillips an annoying class teacher and so many other boisterous characters. L. M Montgomery’s way of seeing and expressing Anne’s life in beautiful words leaves me elated. She gives the story a nice twist of humor. I suggest everyone who loves fictional tales to read this book.
Anne teaches you to be bold and that being different doesn’t mean you are weak. It means you are strong and unique. She makes you think that your imagination can take you to another world and that it is important to strengthen it. The whole series follows Anne’s life in different stages and the last books are about her children.
I give this book a 5-star rating and
I have a good hunch that you will feel the same way if you read the book.
Earlier I believed that reading
classics was unecessary when I could read the latest books filled to the
brim with suspense, mystery and modern inventions. But, reading Anne of Green
Gables changed my perspective. I found the classic interesting and very funny.
Reading classics is the closest we will get to time travel to see
how things were done in the earlier century or further long ago. It is like
history without the history textbook you have left aside to study in the end or
never! I saw the way things were done in the book and this fascinated me, how
simple life was and so calm and beautiful. Reading classics opens our eyes to
how different our world was and how it is now.
