“Be the change that you wish to see in the world”

~Mahatma Ghandi

The world is constantly changing, the people in the world are also changing. Life continues to put us in unexpected situations like the current times. So often we wish we had more heroes to save the day. But, we need not look too far. The heroes who make a difference in today’s world don’t wear capes or fly, but they play great roles in helping the society. That is why today’s blog is dedicated to them, three young girl activists who are doing great things to help the community.

Malala Yousafzai:

Education is a gift that none can take away

Malala Yousafzai was born on the 12th of July 1997 in Swat District of Pakistan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. When the Pakistani Taliban’s influence grew in Swat, the BBC Urdu website asked Malala to blog anonymously about her life. Malala works on spreading awareness about girl’s education threats all around the globe making her a global activist. At the age of 17 she became the youngest Noble Prize laureate. Several funds related to girls’ education rights have also been named after her. She also recently graduated from Oxford University with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics.

Today she has her own website called Malala Fund. Through this website she encourages users to donate small amounts so that she and her team can help girls reach education across the world. She believes that every girl will be in school by her lifetime. She also says that we must encourage girls that their voices matter. She strongly feels that, there are many Malalas out there.

Greta Thunberg:

“We don’t inherit the planet from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children!”

Greta was born on the 3rd of January 2003 in Stockholm, Sweden. She is a climate activist and she first heard about the climatic change problems when she was eight. Only a little later she was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (difficulties in social interaction), obsessive–compulsive disorder (feels the need to repeat certain activities and routines) and selective mutism (Anxiety disorder). With such constraints she still continues to fight for the cause. She made her first step towards supporting the environment by making her family vegan, upcycling and reducing the amount of travelling. In the year 2018 she began school climate strikes. She took a short break from school and started this strike. She said that "As people they think what I am doing is good, but as teachers they say I should stop." She claimed that her teachers’ views were divided. Along with multiple protests and strikes she also speaks at lots of public places to raise concern about the climate. She also attends many summits such as the UN Climate Action Summit. She has inspired many school students who now believe that climate change is a major issue and action needs to be taken. Starting something called ‘The Greta Effect’.

Aranya Johar:

A woman with a voice, is by definition a strong woman

Aranya was born on the 7th September 1998, she was raised in Mumbai. She is a slam poet and through her powerful poems she moves people and conveys her message. She is a girls’ rights activist. She has been writing poems since she was a teen, she performed at events where she delivered her poems. She is a remarkable orator. She is also the co-founder of More Than Mics. A curator of blind poetry sessions and poetry nights. She shows her power to the world in her poems, her poems truly speak for themselves.

These are 3 girl activists who  motivate me to do something which can make a difference to the world. They are living examples of the saying that it always seems impossible until it is done. We need more everyday heroes like these girls. Their stories taught me that it does not matter who we are, it matters what we can do to make the world a happy place. So, think what can you do to help the people around you? It could even be as simple as thanking someone for something or repaying someone’s kindness. After all the first step is what really matters.
